It was hard to miss the news that tensions have been high between Russia and America. Reports that President Putin has been amassing soldiers along the Ukrainian border, threatening to invade, have been circulating for a while. While Ukraine has been important to Russia and much was made of President Putin’s comments about the break up of the USSR, it is unclear whether annexing Ukraine is his goal. While the invasion of Crimea is fresh in everyone’s minds, Mary Dejevsky suggests that Russia is on the defensive as Ukraine seeks to join NATO. Having an American-allied presence right on its doorstep is a bridge too far for Putin, but Dejevsky doubts he wants to invade. Especially in winter. The G7 nations have threatened sanctions and President Biden assured Ukrainian leaders he would support them to deter any Russian aggression. |
