Evidence that Russian soldiers have committed atrocities in Ukrainian towns is growing, with German intelligence revealing they intercepted audio communications where troops advocated for killing civilians. Even China has called for an investigation. Russian military spokesmen have insisted that the macabre images of bodies in the streets of Kyiv were staged by Ukraine.

While Russian forces have retreated from most of western Ukraine, it appears that they are regrouping to take more of the eastern part of the country. Various nations responded by ratcheting up sanctions against Russia. Lithuania is cutting off Russian gas imports and U.S. Congress voted to halt normal trade with Moscow. In a rare move, the United Nations General Assembly voted to suspend Russia’s membership after the accusations of war crimes.
