A thrill of hope

Pastor Will Weedon appeared on Issues Etc last week to discuss his favorite church season, Advent. The conversation coalesced around the hymn, “Hark! A Thrilling Voice is Sounding” (which many of our readers may have sung yesterday in Divine Service). The hymn exhorts us to “cast away the works of darkness” reminding us of the solemn warning of God’s wrath against sin which is burning like an oven

Pastor Weedon reminded listeners that as much as Advent is a season for “sloth dispelling” it is also shot through with a thrill of hope as we await our Savior’s appearing in glory. While on that day, the world will be “wrapped in fear”, calling for rocks to fall on them, “shielded by his mercy” we will not be afraid, while eternal ages run. Even so, come Lord Jesus!
